After living in the western Pacific on Saipan for five years, we returned stateside in 1966 with a stop in Denver to visit relatives. My dad bought a brand new Rambler Ambassador and we headed out for Fairbanks. The Alcan was mostly gravel back then with plenty of dust and mud. It tore our new car up pretty bad but we made it. It was an experience I'll never forget. I've driven the highway by myself 4 times since then. Compared to 1966 the highway today is a piece of cake. I would recommend the drive to anyone that has some time to spare and is looking for an adventure that will blow your mind. Happy travels.
Charles - You got that right. Traveling the old Alaska highway, wasn't for the faint of heart. Today, it's more like a very long Sunday drive. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your stories. I enjoy them so much. Even though my stay in Cordova was only for a few years, some days I hated it but most of the time I LOVED it. It was a Beautiful growing experience for me at the young age of 23., I left when I was 30. I had so many fond memories. From working in the cannery to flying in a four-seater Beaver to go clam digging. To four wheeling up by the Million Dollar Bridge., watching the neighbor kids' ice skating on Eyak lake. I could go on and on.
